About WIIS-NE & Membership Benefits

Located in one of the intellectual capitals in the world, internationally renowned for teaching, research, events, and publications in international peace and security studies, WIIS-New England aims to bridge the vast opportunities at various universities in the area. It provides members with a unique ability to network at the numerous Boston-area events held by sponsoring universities and yearly conferences. In addition, members receive job updates in the academic, public, and private sectors.

WIIS-New England was founded in 2007 by a small group of women specialists in peace and security studies at Brandeis University, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It reflects all affiliated universities and centers in both membership and events.

Dinner with Ambassador Barbara Bodine
7:30 p.m., MC2 Bistro in the Marriott Hotel in Kendall Square (located right next to the Kendall Square T-stop). Three course dinner and discussion with Ambassador Barbara Bodine. She will be speaking on her experiences and the role of women in the Middle East.

Bio: BARBARA BODINE is currently a Robert Wilhelm Fellow at the MIT Center for International Studies (CIS). Ambassador Bodine, a former career member of the Senior Foreign Service, spent much of her 30-year diplomatic career in the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula. In 2003, she served as coordinator for post-conflict reconstruction for Baghdad and the central governorates of Iraq. From 1997-2001, a period that included the terrorist attack on the USS Cole, she was the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. Prior to that appointment, Ambassador Bodine served as Deputy Principal Officer in Baghdad during the Iran-Iraq War and, in 1990, as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion and occupation. She received the Secretary of State's Award for Valor for her work in occupied Kuwait. In addition to a number of assignments in the State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Ambassador Bodine was the Department's Associate Coordinator for Operations. She also served as acting overall Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Dean of the School of Professional Studies at the Foreign Service Institute, Director of East African Affairs and Senior Advisor for International Security Negotiations in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs. In addition to the Award for Valor, her awards at the Department of State included the Secretary's Career Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award. Ambassador Bodine, formerly a Senior Fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Director of its Governance Initiative in the Middle East, is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in Political Science and Asian Studies) and The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Ambassador Bodine is a participant in MIT's CIS Persian Gulf Initiative—a series of workshops that examines specific problems in the Gulf and features experts from the region—and contributes to the Center's public forums, conferences and research projects
