Staff Biographies

Denise Bertholin is the Development Coordinator at WIIS.  Before joining WIIS in October 2007, she worked at Partners of the Americas, Catholic World Mission and Yale University.  As a Reach Out Fellow, she interned for ANINI, a non-profit in Guatemala that helps children with disabilities.  She received a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from Yale University, with distinction in the second major.  While at Yale, she co-founded and led the Squash Club, and spent her junior year in Paris.  In addition to being fluent in French, Ms. Bertholin is bilingual in English and Spanish.


Kirsten Lundgren is the Events Coordinator for the Center for Peace and Security Studies (CPASS) and Women In International Security (WIIS). She previously served as a program assistant for National Defense University’s NATO Program. In addition, she has interned with the Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children at the International Rescue Committee. Ms. Lundgren is highly proficient in French and spent her junior year of college studying and interning in France. She received her B.A. in Political Science and French from Middlebury College in 2007.


Jennifer Park is the Outreach Coordinator for the Center for Peace and Security Studies (CPASS) and Women In International Security (WIIS). Prior to joining WIIS in February 2007, she worked at the Save Darfur Coalition and the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. She has interned at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (Network to Bridge Race and Ethnicity), and is an alumna of the Public Leadership Education Network. Ms. Park holds an M.Sc. in International Public Policy from University College London in England and received her B.A. in Economics from Barnard College in New York City.


Marie-Laure Poiré is the Membership Services Coordinator at WIIS responsible for maintaining membership records and serving as the primary contact for WIIS members. Ms. Poiré joined WIIS in November 2006. Prior to joining WIIS, she was the Deputy Director of the Center on Politics & Foreign Relations and the Managing Editor of Transatlantic Magazine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Ms. Poiré has worked in the Press and Communication Office of the Embassy of France. She was also an intern with Europe Magazine, a former publication of the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington D.C. Ms. Poiré holds a Bachelors degree in international relations and translation from the Ecole Supérieure de Traduction et Relations Internationales (ESTRI), Lyon, France. Ms. Poiré is fluent in French and English.


Jolynn Shoemaker joined WIIS as Executive Director in January 2006. Previously, she handled international law and policy issues for the Initiative for Inclusive Security (formerly Women Waging Peace), an initiative of Hunt Alternatives Fund. She served as Country Director in the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of the Secretary of Defense, International Security Policy (Eurasia), where she focused on the Western Balkans region. She was a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) from 2000-2002. During that time, she was the Regional Advisor for Southern and East Africa at the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Office of Country Reports and Asylum Affairs. She completed two rotational assignments working as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Defense, General Counsel’s Office for International Affairs. Ms. Shoemaker has a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, an M.A. from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and a B.A. from University of California, San Diego. She has published articles and chapters on women and armed conflict, legal reform in post-conflict situations, and human rights.
