Deepti Choubey

Deputy Director, Nonproliferation Program
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
[WIIS member since March 2008]

Deepti Choubey is the Deputy Director of the Nonproliferation Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Deepti is responsible for establishing strategic priorities for the program, conducting research and generating policy analysis, designing and implementing outreach initiatives, and leading the Carnegie International Nonproliferation Conference. Her research interests include the calculations of non-nuclear weapon states, the intersection of nuclear nonproliferation and climate change agendas, and the role of nonproliferation for long-term U.S. foreign policy.

Deepti earned her Master of International Affairs, with a focus on South Asia security policy, from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She also became a Foreign Language and Areas Studies Fellow in Hindi and Urdu at Columbia. She earned her undergraduate degree in Government from Harvard University.

Prior to joining the Carnegie Endowment in 2006, Choubey was the Director of the Peace and Security Initiative (PSI) for the Ploughshares Fund. The PSI is a network of more than 160 think tanks, advocacy organizations, grassroots groups, and funders that work together to increase their capacity to influence U.S. national security policies. Before joining Ploughshares, Choubey worked for Ambassador Nancy Soderberg in the New York office of the International Crisis Group. Before that, Deepti was a strategy consultant advising market-leading companies in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Deepti is also a member of the US in the World task force, which supports the work of advocates of pragmatic, principled, effective, and collaborative U.S. engagement in the world. Outside of work, she serves as a Board Member of the Harvard Women's Leadership Project Alumni Network, which aims to inspire women's leadership on campus and beyond.

Deepti spends her limited free time playing tennis, reading The New Yorker and planning her next international trip (climbing the Beng Melea ruins in Cambodia this past October currently ranks as a favorite travel experience).

Deepti is one of WIIS’ newest members and she looks forward to getting to know other members. Her words of advice to younger WIIS members? “Being introspective (and honest!) about your talents and interests can help ensure you pick opportunities where you will thrive and excel.”

She can be reached for questions at dchoubey@CarnegieEndowment.org.
