Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who may apply? Can I apply again if I was not accepted in previous years?

Graduate students currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program in international relations, political science, history, security studies, public policy, conflict resolution, law, relevant sciences, or other fields related to international affairs may apply. Individuals who were not accepted to past Symposia are encouraged to apply again.

2. Is the Symposium only open to women students?

No. Both women and men are encouraged to apply.

3. Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply?

No.

4. Is there an application fee?

No. Accepted students, however, are expected to pay a nonrefundable $125 registration fee.

5. When are the applications due?

The application deadline for the 2008 Symposium is January 31, 2007. Due to a highly competitive selection process, late applications will not be accepted. Applicants are notified of their status in mid-April.

6. I'm not enrolled in a specific or traditional "international affairs" graduate program. Should I apply?

Yes. We encourage applicants from any field related to international affairs, broadly defined. In addition to the areas of study listed above, past participants have studied business, sociology, political psychology, economics, journalism, and philosophy to name a few.

7. Can I have my recommendation forms faxed or emailed to the Summer Symposium Coordinator?

No. WIIS will not accept any part of the application via fax or email. The entire application and all related materials must arrive via post.

8. If accepted, must I arrange for my own travel and lodging? Are there fellowships available for travel? Who is eligible?

Accepted participants must make their own travel arrangements. There are a limited number of travel fellowships available, and they will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need. WIIS encourages accepted participants to seek other funding sources, such as their own graduate program department. WIIS will provide housing and most meals during the Symposium.

9. Will I receive confirmation that my application has arrived?

No. If you are particularly concerned as to whether your application materials have arrived, please email the Summer Symposium Coordinator. No phone calls, please.

10. When will applicants be notified if they are accepted?

Applicants will be notified of their status by mid-April. Those applicants who are not accepted will be notified via email.
